UNDERGROUND RESERVOIR-CUM-BOOSTER PUMPING STATION
AT GANDHI MAIDAN
Within the service district of Garden Reach Water Works Ward nos. 137 to 141 under Borough-XV of Kolkata Municipal, Corporation is suffering an acute shortage of potable water. The major reason is the vast distance from the Garden Reach Water Works, which is the source of potable water in this locality.
To provide sufficient potable surface water at a requisite pressure, a project for an underground reservoir-cum-booster pumping station is proposed to construct at Gandhi Maidan. The capacity of the proposed reservoir will be 3.0 MG. The main components of the project are the underground reservoir, booster pumping station and booster chlorinator. This booster chlorinator will prevent any occurrence of waterborne gastro-enteric disease in I this locality. To feed the water from GRWW into this UGR, a dedicated pipeline will be shortly laid by KMC.
The major benefits of this project are :
adequate and quality water access to the residents
the pressure would be maintained to reach all regions
dependency on groundwater will be diminished and thus adverse environmental impact could be better; managed
expedite the economic, industrial and commercial; growth
better quality of life of the target residents
The entire: project will be executed by K.M.W. & S.A. and after; implementation of the project about 2.72 lakhs of people of this area will be benefited. The implementation period is 18 months. Land for the proposed project site has been purchased by Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
The project was included under the JNNURM under Ministry of Urban Development, Govt of India. The project cost is Rs. 10.66 crores, of which Govt. of India will provide 35% of the project cost and the rest expenditure will be borne by Govt. of West Bengal and KMDA.
